The five men who allegedly burned a rape victim after pouring kerosene and setting her on fire, while she was on her way to the court have been arrested said the statement issued by the UP police hours after the incident on Thursday morning.
Among those held for “burning” the 23-year-old woman includes Shivam, the main accused, who was at large in the rape case filed by the woman in March this year. All of them have been taken into Police custody.
The victim has been transferred to a super-specialty hospital in Lucknow, where her condition continues to be critical. She has sustained 60-70 percent burn injuries, an official confirmed.
The horrific incident in Unnao comes amid the ongoing nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of a 27-year-old vet doctor in Hyderabad this week. Under huge criticism from the Opposition, the UP’s Chief Minister Office (CMO) issued a statement, stating that UP CM Yogi Adityanath has ordered the police personnel to investigate the matter on top priority and submit a report to the Home department at the earliest. The CM has also asked for “maximum punitive action” for the culprits in the case.
The Unnao woman, burnt today, had filed a first information report(FIR) in March this year after two men in her paternal village raped her and captured the footage. One among the key accused was arrested earlier based on the probe, a police official said.
