Riyadh: Pro-government daily Yeni Safak reported on Wednesday that it had heard audio recordings which confirm that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was tortured before being decapitated inside Riyadh’s consulate in Istanbul.
According to Yeni, Khashoggi’s fingers were chopped off and was brutally killed.
Ahead of his wedding with Turkish fiancée, he just vanished after entering the official consulate. According to Turkey police, he was killed by 15 Saudi officials, though the Saudi government has called the allegation ‘baseless’.
Washington Post has earlier also cited unnamed US and Turkish officials who have listened to audio and video tapes which prove that Khashoggi died after entering the consulate.
Saudi Arabia’s consul to Istanbul has heard Mohammed al Otaibi saying ‘Do this outside. You are going to get me in trouble’ says Safak. Another daily has mentioned that somebody is heard saying on the tape to Khashoggi ‘If you want to live when you come to Saudi Arabia, be quiet.’
Otaibi left on Tuesday for Riyadh from Istanbul ahead of a planned search of his residence as part of the Turkish official investigation into Khashoggi’s disappearance.
Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State has said that Saudi Arabia has promised to conduct full investigation in Khashoggi’s case.
