The Election Commission of India today announced dates for Lok Sabha elections 2019. The elections in Punjab will be held in a single phase. Polling will be held on May 19 and the results will be declared on May 23.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has formed a pre-poll alliance with its long-time ally Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab. Of the 13 Lok Sabha seats in the state, the SAD will field candidates in 10 and the BJP, on remaining three. The BJP-SAD alliance will be challenged by the ruling Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, SAD won four out of the 10 seats it contested, while the BJP won two out of the three. The Congress won three seats, while AAP had victory over four seats.
In Punjab, the alliance of BJP-SAD has failed to garner from the Modi Wave which started around 2014 general elections. The alliance also lost the state elections to Congress in 2017, also the Leader of Opposition position went to the first time contestant AAP putting the BJP-SAD alliance on the third spot in the state.
